A mechanical road sweeper was the unlikely object of a police car chase on the streets of Surrey recently. It may not be everyone’s idea of a dream machine, but to Guildford Borough Council’s Environment Services Group, a Johnston Compact is an essential - and rather valuable – piece of equipment. When thieves made off with one, however, all was not lost. Many of the Council’s fleet are fitted with Quartix satellite tracking, and once the theft from the depot was confirmed, Fleet Manager Dave Tobutt ( seen in the photo above with the recovered sweeper) was on the case. Logging on to the Quartix web site, he obtained the fleeing vehicle’s precise location and dialled 999.
“Within 15 minutes we had a phone call from the police informing us that two individuals had been taken into custody. We were able to recover our sweeper in one piece, and we couldn’t help having a chuckle at the same time. The vehicle was in sweeping mode, which meant that it was travelling at just 12 mph when it was apprehended. Even so, without the onboard tracker they could have got clean away.”
