The Vehicle Tracking Project - the BookBus
The vehicle being tracked is one of two large buses that visit schools and nurseries. The BookBus visits Primary schools twice a year, based on an agreed schedule. Whilst the BookBus is at the school, children from each class are able to select books from the bus to refresh their class's fiction loan-stock.
The bus is staffed by personnel who are able to advise and encourage the children, as well as providing them with experience in the use of library facilities. The members of this team are used to working with children, are police-vetted and are experienced in the reading requirements of children of different ages. Many of the staff are ex-teachers.
As a 'Toddle In..' service for 'early years' children, a BookBus will make a series of weekly visits to a playgroup, nursery or pre-school, in order to provide the experience of libraries, choosing and sharing books. This is a vital experience in a different environment, whose importance cannot be overestimated.
